Pearl Keep is home to a sacred relic: the eternal flame. But one day, the mysterious necromancer Arkhton appears with his army of undead, obsessed with taking possession of the relic, which promises him new power. But the soldiers of Pearl Keep and the men and women who inhabit it are ready to defend their faith and their sacred relic, without which all life and light would be irretrievably lost.

In Stronghold Undead, one player takes on the role of Arkhton, while the other player plays the defenders of Pearl Keep. As soon as Arkhton's army of undead breaks through the fortress walls before the eighth round, which signifies the sunrise after which Arkhton and his army crumble to dust, Arkhton takes the relic and wins the game. The defenders in Pearl Keep must hold the walls and survive the darkest night they have ever seen.

Attackers and defenders begin each round by stocking up supplies and making preparations. The attacking necromancer performs his dark magic using powerful spell cards. But each of his spells gives the defender more time to make their own preparations. The defender receives hourglasses, which they can use for various actions within the fortress or to defend against the attacks of siege weapons and the undead on the castle walls. After the attacker's maneuvers and the assault with ranged and melee combat, as well as the regrouping of the defenders, a round ends. If the attacker has managed to break through the defensive line in at least one section of the wall, he enters the fortress and captures the relic. If the walls withstand the onslaught, a new round begins.
